Portuguese Network of Museums

The Portuguese Network of Museums (RPM) is an organized system of museums based on voluntary membership, progressively structured and aiming at the decentralization, mediation, qualification and cooperation between museums.

Created in 2000 within the scope of a Project Structure under the auspices of the Portuguese Institute of Museums, it is a fundamental tool for the implementation of national museological policies and the qualification of Portuguese museums, one of the responsibilities of the Museums and Monuments of Portugal, E.P.E.

The goals of the Portuguese Network of Museums are: the advancement and qualification of national museums, the institutional cooperation and coordination between museums, the decentralization of resources, the planning and rationalization of public investments ensuing from the application of Community funds, the circulation of information relating to museums, the promotion of thoroughness and professionalism in museum practices and techniques, the fostering of coordination between museums, and the professional development of their staff.

As a structure of coordination and a platform of communication and support for museums, the Portuguese Network of Museums aims to encourage transversality in the implementation of projects and communication between the museums themselves, to support the training, information (diffusion) and qualification of its members, and, as determined by law, to ensure the accreditation process of museums seeking to join the Network.

The strengthening of the Portuguese Network of Museums and the guarantee of provision of competent services to the public contribute to the increasing importance of museums as agents of social change and catalysts for the country’s cultural, economic and social development.

RPM museums

The Network currently comprises 169 museums. Its richness lies in the diversity of geographies, guardianships, collections, facilities, educational and cultural activities, models of interaction with local communities, and managing systems.

Museum accreditation

According to the Framework Law of Portuguese Museums, the accreditation of museums involves the assessment and official recognition of the technical quality of museums, with the aim of promoting access to culture and enriching cultural heritage.

Museum accreditation and subsequent incorporation into the RPM is a voluntary process that follows the verification of compliance with all the museological functions stated in the above-mentioned Framework Law and specified in the application form published in the Normative Resolution No. 3/2006, of January 25th.

An intention for accreditation by a museum/guardianship must be communicated to the RPM Technical Department via the following e-mail: rpm@museusemonumentos.pt

RPM training

Training is one of the structuring axes of the RPM, which endeavours to contribute to the qualification of professional teams in Portuguese museums, and to foster good practices in core areas of museological activity.

The RPM Training Program is aimed at museum professionals, with priority given to technicians working at the Network’s museums, and is based on the provision of practical and participatory courses, which in a decentralized manner are held throughout the national territory in RPM museums.

Training Courses 2024
Gestão de Risco em Museus - Action carried out between November 12th and 14th in Museu de Mértola – Cláudio Torres.

Training Courses 2025

Museum Support Program — ProMuseus

The Museum Support Program – ProMuseus is a financial support system aimed at RPM accredited museums that are not under the tutelage of the central administration.

The creation of financial support programs for museums in the RPM network constitutes one of the structuring measures of the national museological policy and seeks to promote the qualification of Portuguese museums and to correct existing imbalances, contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage, and improve the services provided to the public, as well as the integrated use of resources within the scope of cultural policy.

The ProMuseus is regulated through the Normative Resolution No. 4-A/2023, of March 7th, and the 2023 competition has been launched through Notice No. 5110-A/2023, of March 9th.
