Located in the city of Miranda do Douro, the Terra de Miranda Museum is temporarily installed in the former Episcopal Palace of Miranda do Douro due to re-qualification works in Domus Municipalis, a 17th-century building hosting ethnographic and archaeological collections since 1982 and whose exhibition narrative represents the social, cultural, religious and economic life of local communities. The Museum's reopening, in the renovated Domus Municipalis, is scheduled for 2024.
In the exhibition narrative of the Terra de Miranda Museum, the archaeological and historical objects refer the visitor to the long hours of the Miranda do Douro region, to the specific nature of the Mirandese language and the role it plays in the creation and external acknowledgement of the cultural identity of this region.
Collections result from a systematic selection of items carried out by a team led by António Maria Mourinho, its founder, and come from the municipalities of Miranda do Douro, Vimioso and Mogadouro. They are divided into different categories: archaeology, weaponry, arts and crafts, hunting, ceramics, household equipment, musical instruments, numismatics, objects of ritual use, herding, wickerwork, costume, transportation and clothing.
This Museum proposes the materialisation of an approach to the culture of the Land of Miranda, particularly in the field of ethnography, referring the visitor to the ancestry and daily life of the people from Miranda.
Temporarily transferred to the premises of the former Bishop's Palace due to re-qualification works.
