The Photographic Documentation Archive ensures the safeguarding and update of the photographic inventory of movable, immovable and integrated cultural assets. It is also further in charge of safeguarding a valuable acquis of historical photography, from several provenances, including collections from museums, monuments and palaces, and private collections of special relevance for the history of art and photography in Portugal. Within this framework, it develops management, preservation, inventory, treatment and restoration tasks, ensuring public access to this acquis.
Its assets include thousands of original negatives and positives, including works by Frederick William Flower, San Payo, Silva Nogueira, João Martins, Augusto Bobone, among others.
It is also in charge of preparing rules and regulations for the provision of images, procedures for collection, processing and digitisation, and preservation of photographic documentation.
The Photographic Documentation Archive provides technical services to other bodies, public and private, when their intervention is needed, and supports research on movable cultural property and historical photography collections. This entity established also partnerships with conservation educational institutions and authors from different fields of knowledge, in order to develop the study and dissemination of their acquis.
A significant sample of the work carried out so far is available online through the Raiz application, the platform, heir to Matriz, intended for the inventory, management and dissemination of cultural assets, developed by Museus e Monumentos de Portugal.
